Ktima Biblia Chora has created a wine line with the Biblinos that is based on a mysterious grape variety that cannot be matched to any known cultivar. A solitary vine was discovered on Pangeon some years ago and subsequently cultivated – DNA analysis revealed only that it is an ancient Greek grape variety. The name Biblinos references the bibline wine that was famous across the entire Mediterranean in antiquity, once produced in precisely this area between Pangeon and the sea. The poet Theocritus himself celebrated it as a four-year-aged drop of lovely fragrance.
The Biblinos Rosé 2020 presents itself on the nose as rather enigmatic at first, leaning fruity. On the palate, however, it reveals ample minerality and phenolic presence – a very multi-layered wine that is still hard to decipher and perhaps needs a bit more time for its various aromas to differentiate themselves. With enough patience, though, it already gives up some of its secrets. The fruit tends more towards stone and pome fruit than berries, and on the finish, acidity and salinity carry for a very long time. An outstanding 91 points.
