Plagios White 2020 from Ktima Biblia Chora, a 100% Chardonnay from the PGI Pangeon appellation in Macedonia. This wine is one of my clear favorites among Greek Chardonnays from the 2020 vintage, alongside the Tramonto 2020 from Alpha Estate — both are easily available in Germany and I drink them quite often. The Stella from Ktima Katsarou is in a different league for 2020, but unfortunately it's hard to get in Germany. So far, the Plagios had always had the edge over the Alpha Estate Tramonto, scoring around 93 to 94 points in various tastings. Half a year ago I suspected it would peak soon. But so much depends on storage. I just had a well-stored bottle that was still amazingly fresh. Lemon tart and brioche on the nose and palate. Not as exotic and variegated as some other vintages of the Plagios White, but very elegant — a wine that earns 94 points. Interestingly, this time the Alpha Estate Tramonto 2020 could compete, having improved so much that the oak is now perfectly integrated, also deserving 94 points. This once again demonstrates that these wines are sold way too young most of the time in Greek restaurants.
