Ktima Papoutsi — Rigma Merlot 2020
PGI Atalanti
85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon
Central Greece, Greece
Red | dry
13% | Organic
As part of an Easter tasting of Greek Merlots, the Rigma Merlot 2020 from Ktima Papoutsi (not to be confused with Ktima Papoutsis from the PDO Nemea) really stood out. The organic estate is located in the PGI Atalanti, just a minute away from Domaine Hatzimichalis. At only 13% alcohol, this organic wine is much rounder than some of its neighbours, allowing a truly varietal expression on the palate. On top of that, there are very appetising cherry aromas that dominate the nose. One small downside: the 15% Cabernet Sauvignon — thankfully declared on the label — more than compensates for the shorter barrel ageing (8 instead of 12 months) as far as tannins are concerned. The wine is still too astringent. But given all the positive aspects mentioned, it already deserves an excellent 90+ points — and still has plenty of room to grow.
