The Economou 2012 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot from the Cretan Domaine Economou. In a direct blind comparison with a same-vintage and very similarly composed Pontet-Canet from Bordeaux, it more than held its own. The Cretan wine was immediately present with aromas of dried fruits like plums and raisins – clearly already showing some maturity. On an even earlier occasion, it had been spicier with more herbal notes that paired well with the robust tannins. Still a great wine, and the sweetness on the finish is particularly convincing. Initially rated at 93 points, with some uncertainty as to whether it was on the decline or just going through a brief dumb phase. But a more recent bottle showed it fully back on form! So one can now write 93+ points with quite some confidence.
