Lidl — Retsina NV

Retsina Traditional Appellation
100% Savatiano
Attica, Greece
White | dry
11%

The Lidl Retsina, a non-vintage wine made from 100% Savatiano grapes from Attica, gives you a good idea of why the Retsina procedure was so popular in the past. Savatiano and Retsina are almost synonymous — and often equated with the idea of making cheap wine drinkable with pine resin. At just 11% alcohol, the acidity here clearly comes from unripe fruit rather than balanced ripeness. Still, the wine tastes decent, with the resin effectively covering the lack of aromas. Quite enjoyable for what it is. Tasted alongside several other Retsinas — including the far more subtle Mylonas Retsina and the spectacularly complex Pithos Retsina from Andreou Winery (93 points) — the Lidl version obviously can't compete on depth or elegance, but it serves its purpose as an affordable, straightforward Retsina. A good 82 points.
