Kir-Yianni's 2018 Diaporos Single Vineyard (92% Xinomavro, 8% Syrah) carries the PGI Imathia designation, even though the vineyard is located in Naoussa – the tiny addition of Syrah disqualifies it from PDO status. And what a wonderful decision that was! Despite 18 months in oak, this is anything but a rustic wine. It delivers an explosion of delicious tomato aromas that lead into an inviting texture and a thrilling, lingering finish. A subtle smoky note adds complexity, while the impressive 15% alcohol is perfectly integrated. This true outlier effortlessly surpasses many famous PDO wines from the same region. 94 points.
