Ktima Katsarou 2019 is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot from the slopes of lower Olympus in Krania, Thessalia, where the estate farms organically over 90 acres at elevations between 650 and 820 meters. This is a wine with great history – Ktima Katsarou was one of the earliest producers of high-quality Bordeaux blends in Greece and among the leading boutique wineries during the 1990s. I tasted this alongside other Greek Bordeaux-style blends, including the Kokotós Estate 2020 and the Kir-Yianni Blue Fox 2020, to see how the category is evolving. The wine pours cloudy yet alluring. On the nose, it begins with a touch of sulfur before blossoming into sweet blackberry jelly. The palate is dominated by sweet berry notes, with robust tannins that gently curtail the full aromatic expression. Overall, this shows promising evolution and complexity, earning a well-deserved 94+ points – one of my favorite blends of its kind from Greece.
