Ktima Erithrou Rodou – Malagousia 2021

Single Vineyard

PGI Drama
100% Malagousia
Macedonia, Greece
White | dry
13%

The most northeasterly wine in an extensive Malagousia comparative tasting – from PGI Drama near the Turkish border – is also the dry Malagousia that proved most convincing. The debut 2020 vintage from the young estate Ktima Erithrou Rodou had already impressed greatly. The 2021 vintage is likewise distinguished by an entirely floral nose. Here you also get heavier rose scents this time. However, the impression is less overwhelming than the previous year. What some might regret actually makes the wine more attractive and rounder. The warmer year shows in the 13% alcohol. But it doesn't bother at all. The acidity is relatively restrained, certainly behind the wine from Ktima Kissa. Yet it doesn't carry as far mainly because the wine is immediately lifted by its aromatics. The minerality also supports the wine and stands out very positively here, because it too is accompanied by aromatic expression. On the palate there's a lovely sweetness that invites you to keep drinking. The finish is once again very floral – and long. Yields well below 30 hl/ha and the restriction to free-run juice emphatically underscore the ambition to deliver a genuine quality product here. A very accomplished wine that clearly dominates this tasting and therefore deserves an outstanding 94 points. The 2020 vintage is still available for €17.99 a bottle.
