Ktima Erithrou Rodou – Malagousia 2020
Single Vineyard
PGI Drama
100% Malagousia
Macedonia, Greece
White | dry
The very first vintage from Ktima Erithrou Rodou. And this wine packs a real punch right out of the gate. The winemakers boldly commit entirely to the floral end of the Malagousia spectrum – and are rewarded for it. The wine has crystal-clear elderflower fruit, complemented on the palate by refreshing lychee notes and wonderful acidity. The whole thing is rounded off by a gorgeous texture, a result of five months on the fine lees. This is simply a few leagues above what Müller-Thurgau can do! If you're a fan of aromatic wines, you absolutely need to try this Malagousia.
The debut 2020 vintage, produced from a yield of just 26.5 hl/ha and exclusively from free-run juice, came to market with 3,000 bottles and is now also available in Germany through Ralph Urban.
A clear-cut, outstanding 92 points. The fact that it has "only" won silver medals since its release probably has to be explained by the judges being out of their depth with this internationally still very little-known style of the Malagousia grape. They're presumably entirely captivated by the fruity direction set by its discoverer Gerovassiliou.
