The Antigone 2004 (PDO Sitia) from Domaine Economou is an 80/20 blend of Liatiko and Mandilaria (Voidomati). A true legend, incredibly refined. In the glass, a pale garnet with amber-tinged reflections. Complex aromas of dried cherries, figs, Mediterranean herbs, leather, and a hint of vanilla. It actually appears younger than the Mirabello 2015 from the same estate. On the palate, a revelation: from the very first millisecond, aromas, acidity, sweetness, and impossibly polished tannins converge in perfect harmony. Powerful, elegant, and unforgettable. Initially rated 97 points at the beginning of last year, the score had to be bumped up to 98 points after a second tasting on New Year's Eve. One of the greatest Greek red wines – and there is remarkably broad consensus among wine critics on this: Paul Gegas awards 97 points, as does Yannis Athanasakopoulos. Wine & Spirits gives it 96 points, Int'l Wine Review 96–97 points – and the two Masters of Wine Susie Barrie and Peter Richards are absolutely thrilled, going so far as to declare it their wine of the year. Jancis Robinson scores it 18/20. €120 is no small sum, but in this case it is entirely justified. Drink now or cellar for another decade.
