Alpha Estate, in the high-altitude region of Amyndeon, is one of the most technically accomplished wineries in Greece, and the Malagouzia from the single vineyard "Turtles" – named after the turtles that nest beside the vines at 670 m – is one of its flagships. Two nearby lakes temper the climate here, allowing this aromatic, once nearly extinct variety to ripen slowly.
The wine is deliberately vinified without wood, with cold maceration and brief skin contact, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by two months on the fine lees with regular bâtonnage. Unlike the Malagouzia from Gerovassiliou, which is in part aged in barrique, the creamy texture here comes not from the barrel but solely from fruit, ripeness and lees contact. It retails for around €13.
With Malagouzia, the timing of the harvest is delicate, and Yiannis Karakasis once put it rather neatly. Up to about 13.2% vol. the fresh citrus side dominates; above 13.5% the terpenes tip over into the muscat-like and the variety loses its typicity; the herbal-floral textbook notes he expressly locates in the cooler mesoclimates. That is precisely the Turtles site, one of the coolest zones in Greece, which is why this Malagouzia naturally bears a herbal-floral signature.
That is also how I remember the 2020, a cool and very wet vintage that turned out greener and less fruit-forward at a good 13%. 2025 was different, warm and sunny enough for ripe fruit, with cool nights for freshness and sustaining acidity. That fits Karakasis's logic, even if the small jump from a good 13 to 13.5% explains little on its own; what matters is the whole weather constellation, which lets the green recede and brings peach, pome fruit and the floral notes to the fore, without the wine already tipping into the perfumed and muscat-like. It thus sits right at the upper edge of this window, ripely harvested but not beyond it.
Curious as to whether this high-wire act would come off in the glass, I tasted it. On the nose lovely pome fruit, almost as peachy as one knows from Gerovassiliou, along with fine white blossom. On the palate it is all Malagouzia, and indeed scarcely herbal anymore; a decidedly pleasant acidity carries very far before the texture from the lees ageing takes over. A long finish, coherent through and through. I'm rather astonished.
With Alpha's white wines I often have the feeling one ought to give them another two years before they show their best side. Not here in any case, this drinks perfectly already. A very clear 92 points, and no reason to wait.
