This dessert wine, Ktima Montofoli from the estate of the same name (known internationally as Montofoli Estate) in the small PGI Karystos (where only two wineries produce wine under this appellation), is a powerhouse!

That the 2013 vintage, which we too got to taste, was recently awarded gold at the Decanter with a corresponding 95 points comes as no surprise whatsoever. In the cuvée of sun-dried grapes, Assyrtiko dominates at 60%. You can make very good dessert wine from this variety alone too, as we recently confirmed here. Combined with smaller portions of Athiri, Aidani and Liatiko, though, this results in a truly special wine that, thanks to its five years of barrel ageing, plays in an entirely different league.

With its dark amber colour and 16% alcohol, it shows in the glass right away that it's not to be taken lightly. On the nose, wonderful butter caramel then knocks you off your feet first. On the palate, heavier plum notes are carried by refreshing citrus aromas and an invigorating acidity. That the estate has created its own chocolate to go with the wine, in which figs and walnuts play an important role, fits aromatically like a glove and carries just such aromatic echoes wonderfully further. A fascinatingly dense dessert wine that deserves phenomenal 19 points and needs to hide behind nothing internationally.
