Montofoli Estate — Ktima Montofoli 2013

PGI Karystos
60% Assyrtiko, Rest Athiri, Aidani und Liatiko
Central Greece, Greece
White | sweet
16%

This dessert wine Ktima Montofoli from the eponymous estate (known internationally as Montofoli Estate) from the tiny PGI Karystos (where only two wineries produce wine under this designation) is an absolute powerhouse!

That the 2013 vintage was recently awarded 95 points and corresponding Gold at the Decanter comes as no surprise whatsoever. In this cuvée of sun-dried grapes, Assyrtiko dominates at 60%. The combination with smaller proportions of Athiri, Aidani and Liatiko results in a truly extraordinary wine that, thanks to its five years of barrel ageing, operates in an entirely different sphere.

With its dark amber colour and 16% alcohol, it makes clear from the moment it hits the glass that it is not to be taken lightly. On the nose, gorgeous butterscotch caramel just knocks you off your feet. On the palate, heavier plum notes are carried by refreshing citrus aromas and an invigorating acidity. The fact that the estate has created its own chocolate to pair with this wine, with figs and walnuts playing a key role, is a perfect aromatic match and beautifully extends those very flavour notes. A fascinatingly dense dessert wine that deserves a phenomenal 96 points and has absolutely no reason to hide behind anything on the international stage.
