Santa Irene – Laxia 2019
100% Mavro Ampelisimo
Lefkosia, Cyprus
Red | dry
Tasted as part of a Cypriot wine tasting, the Laxia 2019 from Santa Irene is a single-varietal wine made from the dark-skinned grape Mavro Ampelisimo. On the nose, there's a very clear, perhaps even slightly too straightforward cherry fruit. In the background, a touch of wax plays a supporting role. On the palate, the oak shows itself through very fine toast and vanilla aromas. The tannin structure is soft, like a Merlot. You'd think that a wine you can only talk about briefly shouldn't score very highly. But this one is simply that good. Hence a magnificent 93 points – and at under €10, the value for money is absolutely incredible.
