Penfolds – Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

GI South Australia

14.5%

The 2017 Bin 407 from Penfolds served as the benchmark wine in a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon tasting alongside Greek wines. At 14.5% alcohol, it's quite comparable to its Greek competitors. On the nose, a huge wave of fruit hits you right away – enough to make you worry about how the Greek wines would fare. However, the whole thing drifts a bit into jammy territory and, interestingly, had absolutely nothing left to offer after a few days. That said, it's still a wine with excellent drinkability and tannins that should appeal to a wide range of wine drinkers. An excellent 90 points – and thus a perfect starting point for testing whether Greek wines from the same vintage can keep up for significantly less money, or even come out ahead.
