Olympia Land Estate — Assyrtiko 2020

PGI Ilia
100% Assyrtiko
Peloponnese, Greece
White | dry
14% | Organic

The previous year, Olympia Land Estate's Assyrtiko 2019 (PGI Ilia) had clearly won the race in a comparable tasting, scoring 95 points. The 2020 vintage couldn't match that. The alcohol, too, sits at a more moderate 14% — still not low by any means, but a noticeable step down from the predecessor's 15%.

In the blind tasting of mainland Assyrtiko, this wine was hard to identify. In the end, some characteristic notes of toasted almonds gave it away. The wine is sweet and marked by good fruit on the attack, but it doesn't sustain this through its structure. Ultimately, it remains slimmer and shorter compared to the previous vintage. A perfectly respectable, excellent 90 points — but still a long way behind the outstanding 2019.
