Oenogenesis – Deka 2014

The Oenogenesis Deka 2014 from PGI Drama is one of the few Greek white wines that follows the Bordeaux recipe, blending Sémillon (with a bit more of it in the mix), Sauvignon Blanc, and Ugni Blanc. The nose is beautiful, but on the palate it can't quite keep up that strong impression for long. Two or three years ago this bottle probably would have scored above 90, but tasted after nine years it lands at 89 points – still a very interesting wine with a sweet taste, but for around 15 euros you simply can't expect more at this stage. A really good effort nonetheless! I really appreciate winemakers from the PGI Drama region who do not invest solely in the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc–Assyrtiko blend. It's worth noting that the 2015 vintage of the white Deka reportedly impressed participants at a tasting led by Fotios Stamoulis, so there may well be meaningful vintage variation here. I'd love to try that one and compare.
