Liappas Winery — Roggia White 2019
PGI Karditsa
80% Assyrtiko, 10% Malagousia, 10% Batiki
Thessaly, Greece
White | dry
12.5% | Organic
The Roggia weiß 2019 comes from the small organic estate Liappas Winery in central Greece, in the PGI Karditsa, roughly halfway between the northern Greek wine estates and the Peloponnese. The blend is composed of 80% Assyrtiko, 10% Malagousia, and 10% of the rather similar Batiki grape.
What's particularly appealing here is the herbal side of the Malagousia: at times you get the impression of sniffing Greek mountain tea. On the palate, the Assyrtiko then comes through with interesting fruit. The combination with slightly lactic notes brings canned mandarins to mind, and a certain sweetness fits right in with that. The 2019 vintage is, however, slowly approaching the end of its drinking window, as the winery itself has also emphasized. A very good 85 points.
