Lafazanis Winery — Geometria Agiorgitiko 2020

This Agiorgitiko doesn't carry a PDO Nemea on the label but rather PGI Peloponnes – even though the winery is located right at the heart of ancient Kleonai. The reason: a proportion of grapes from Corinth is also used. The nose shows butterscotch, which then reappears on the palate in classic fashion as sour cherry. Add to that a generous dose of black pepper. The finish is medium-length with raspberry and red currant, demonstrating that an Agiorgitiko can be thoroughly enjoyable without any oak at all, provided it has plenty of animated drinkability. The quite fascinating hints of flint and freshly dampened riverbed on the nose contribute to that as well. A very good wine at 89 points, and one whose style frankly deserves to show up more often.
