Ktima Pavlidis – Thema Red 2017

Agiorgitiko - Syrah

PGI Drama
60% Agiorgitiko, 40% Syrah
Macedonia, Greece
Red | dry
14.5%

Tasted as part of a tasting focused on Agiorgitiko cuvées, the Thema rot 2017 from Ktima Pavlidis is perhaps the most internationally recognized Agiorgitiko cuvée of them all. Syrah is the minority partner at 40%, with Agiorgitiko dominating at 60%, yet the Syrah makes its presence clearly felt even through the violet hues in the color. On the nose, the 2017 vintage showed lovely cherry fruit and rich butterscotch, underscored by a touch of graphite. On the palate, the Syrah emerges with only a hint of pepper but loads of blueberry. The oak is already very well integrated. A very attractive wine, though the finish is unfortunately only medium-length and a shade too dominated by the alcohol (14.5%). That said, it is carried by very pleasant spice notes, cinnamon above all. Not least for that reason, this is already an outstanding cuvée at 90+ points. With all the elements fully in balance, there is clearly much more potential here.
