Ktima Kir-Yianni – Assyrtiko 2020

An absolute counterpoint to Santorini Assyrtiko, tasted as part of a blind tasting of the best mainland Assyrtikos. Thoroughly fruity, lychee and raspberry, on the nose and palate – the Assyrtiko from Ktima Kir-Yianni in the Amyndeo area really does need that Sauvignon Blanc comparison. Still a touch of residual carbonation, though most people won't find it bothersome. At just 13%, this is a wine with serious drinkability – you absolutely cannot go wrong with it. A screwcap couldn't be more fitting. Certainly not a particularly complicated wine. But the nose blows you away every single time, especially when you compare it with other Assyrtiko offerings. There's this fresh lime, still there even after two weeks! And the acidity – exactly as it should be. Given that the wine also managed to unanimously thrill average wine drinkers in the blind tasting – while they checked out on the more elegance-driven version from Alpha Estate just a few kilometres away – it's only fair to award a clear and resounding 93 points. Even more demanding Assyrtiko fans will happily swallow that, especially given the fig on the finish. The 2018 vintage is already available for €10.20.
