Ktima Gerovassiliou – Syrah 2014
PGI Epanomi
Syrah
Macedonia, Greece
Red | dry
The Syrah 2014 from Ktima Gerovassiliou (PGI Epanomi) was tasted as part of an extensive tasting of Greek Syrah reds and scored an excellent 90 points. This was pretty much in the same range as the 2019, which had been tasted a year earlier. That wine had shown gentle smoky aromas with traces of plum and bloody notes on the finish, though the tannins were still very sharp and there were plenty of green notes on the attack. Together with the variety-typical pepper, it had been somewhat overwhelming; only on the following days did it open up and release mocha notes that had been lurking in the background. That's why an older vintage was sought out this time. It seems, however, that the first attempt was a bit too early (in the third year) and now a bit too late (in the ninth year). In any case, this 2014 was the wine with the most beautiful smoky aromatics of the entire tasting – fresh wood-fired pizza! – even if it would probably have been more powerful a few years younger.
