As the crowning finale of an extensive Malagousia comparative tasting, we opened the Malagousia from Overripe Grapes 2018 from Ktima Gerovassiliou. After the estate's dry version in the 2021 vintage had fallen short of expectations at 91 points — the 2020 vintage had still scored a phenomenal 95 points — this bottle was a complete reconciliation. The so typical peach is back in full clarity. The wine has 12.5% alcohol and nothing even remotely sticky about it. It has a very clear-cut style, yet doesn't come across as pretentiously elegant — it's downright playful. But is it even justified to reach for top scores with a dessert wine that impresses in this way rather than through enormous complexity? The answer is: yes. Because you'd be hard-pressed to find a dessert wine with such striking drive anywhere else. On top of that, the finish is endlessly long. A phenomenal 95 points.
