Sauvignon Blanc - Assyrtiko
PGI Pangeon
50% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Assyrtiko
Macedonia, Greece
White | dry
13.5%
In terms of production volume, popularity, positioning within the range, and – not least – quality, this is in many respects the Greek analogue to the estate wine from Robert Weil. (The naysayers would do well to reconsider.) The Sauvignon Blanc, contributing 50% to the blend, greets the nose with a very lovely passionfruit. Though it unfolds relatively slowly. If you need something to pour right away, you'd be better off reaching for the identically blended cuvée from Ktima Pavlidis. The palate pressure, too, needs time to reveal its full extent. Perhaps a few more months of maturity would have given this wine even more lift. But the longer it's open, the more it plays to its strengths – among them a truly magnificent acidity owed to the Assyrtiko and the vineyard terroir. Despite 13.5% alcohol, this remains a wine with beautiful drinkability, and its enormous popularity in Greece is no surprise – it clearly deserves an excellent 91+ points. The wine is available at €12.80 per bottle.
