The Kamaritis from Koutsogiannopoulos Winery is a hidden gem from the volcanic soils of Santorini. This naturally sweet wine is crafted from sundried native grapes, including both red varieties – Mavrotragano, Mandilaria, and Mavrathiro – and white varieties – Assyrtiko, Aidani, and Athiri. The precise blend is a closely guarded secret family recipe, reportedly passed down for 150 years. The grapes are sun-dried for up to two weeks and then aged in oak barrels for a decade. The most recent vintage is available from the winery's webpage for 41 euros, though the 2002 vintage commands a rather steep 197 euros. The Kamaritis 2002 greets the nose with a rich bouquet of coffee, dark chocolate, and dried fruits. On the palate, it strikes a harmonious balance between intense sweetness, tannic notes, and a fresh acidity that keeps the wine eternally young, just as the producers promise. A phenomenal wine that deserves 96 points.
