Domaine Economou — Sitia 2000

PDO Sitia
80% Liatiko, 20% Mandilaria
Crete, Greece
Red | dry
12%

The Sitia 2000 from Domaine Economou is a classic 80:20 blend of Liatiko and Mandilaria. The bottle tasted was purchased online in Greece, and storage, as the cork revealed, was probably not first-rate. Despite this, the wine shows appealing maturity with complex aromas of wild herbs, caramel, and earthy thyme, along with a surprisingly fresh acidity. The slightly fading finish could be down to the 12% alcohol or the suboptimal storage. The estate has earned the benefit of the doubt, and so one can assume that storage did indeed play a role — from well-stored bottles, this should be around 94 points. On wein.plus it gets 85 points, which given the quality of this estate is hardly worth taking seriously.
