Domaine Costa Lazaridi – Château Julia Agiorgitiko 2020

Roughly 750 kilometres north of Nemea, at Domaine Costa Lazaridi in Drama, this Agiorgitiko is produced as part of the Château Julia series, dedicated to the winemaker's wife. Compared with a classic Nemea from the Nemea Winery, the 2020 demonstrates that the variety thrives remarkably well far from its homeland in the PGI Drama. Here too, a truckload of aromatics hits you right away, though now we're moving into darker territory – think blueberries and black cherries. The tannins are velvety soft, the acidity well balanced, and the oak restrained, making its presence felt mainly on the finish with spice notes. An outstanding wine, rewarded with 92 points. When re-tasted three days after opening, a phenomenon emerged that is frequently observed with Agiorgitiko: the concentrated fruit loses some of its charm and turns slightly pungent, condensing into an almost perfumed undertone.
