Dionysos Winery – Orama Red 2016

PGI Peloponnese
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
Peloponnese, Greece
Red | dry
12.5%

As part of a tasting of Greek red wines made from Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), the Orama 2016 from Dionysos Winery already shows first signs of aging in its color. On the nose and palate, too, you could easily mistake it for a wine with a few more years on its back. That said, the leather notes are very appetizing and pair nicely with plum aromas. The tannins still have good grip. The mere 12.5% alcohol (!) pack considerably more punch than you'd expect from that number alone. Admittedly, the wine plays in the same price league as the red Paliomylos 2018 from Ktima Paliomylos (around €15), and the wax capsule arguably lays it on a bit thick for that bracket. Still, this is very solid stuff. You don't need to push the 10 to 15 years of aging potential stated on the bottle, but for drinking right now this is a very good wine at 89 points.
