Avantis Estate – Collection Syrah 2019

The Collection 2019 from Avantis Estate is the premium Syrah from what is arguably the most renowned Greek winery for this grape variety (PGI Evia). In the context of an extensive tasting of Greek Syrah wines, it stood on equal footing with the well-known Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2018 from South Africa in terms of quality. The fruit bomb almost overwhelms on the attack, but then ebbs away harmoniously. Some may find a touch too much sweetness on the finish. After that, the aromatics – here marked by blackberry – push back to the foreground. A terrific wine that deserves a magnificent 93 points.
