Alpha Estate — S.M.X. 2017

Alpha Estate's 2017 S.M.X. (PGI Florina) reduces Xinomavro to 20%, dominated by Syrah (60%) and complemented by Merlot (20%). In an earlier side-by-side tasting with the Axia from the same vintage, the S.M.X. was surprisingly closed off. But in a later rematch as part of a comprehensive Xinomavro exploration, the premium wine showed its true strengths again with impressive concentration and power. Rich blackberry and vanilla aromas lead to silkier tannins than in its youth. Drink now or cellar for another decade. 92+ points.
